About Jen Burke Anderson

My name is Jen Burke Anderson, and I make San Francisco my home.  I’m a writer, thinker, and activist obsessed with media, cultural democracy, common values, and the impact of ideas on society. I write about music, film, media, culture, politics, and society, usually with a humorous bent and spirit of self-inquiry.

In early 2002, responding to the lack of analysis and global perspectives in the U.S. news, I established the weekly newsletter News You Might Have Missed, which continues to round up underreported stories from around the world and from our own backyards, and present them in a succinct, easy-to-read format. In 2004, I became executive director of the parent organization of NYMHM, Independent Arts & Media. (www.artsandmedia.net)  This diverse organization cultivates independent, community-based art, journalism, and media projects.

Since 2006, I have been writing about and researching issues on an independent basis, publishing as staff writer for the Oakland-based magazine Kitchen Sink.

My work as a proofreader at a prestigious global law firm sharpens my language and analysis skills every day while keeping me current with the vital developments of our times.

In August 2009, News You Might Have Missed received a $25,000 developmental grant from the Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation to take this weekly newsletter daily.

In the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine’s 2010 summer wedding special, I published an article on the etiquette of giving cash as a wedding gift.
